the CFA designation
What it Means
The CFA® Program is a globally recognized, graduate level curriculum that provides a strong foundation of real-world investment analysis and portfolio management skills along with the practical knowledge needed in today’s investment industry. It also emphasizes the highest ethical and professional standards.
Since it was first introduced in 1963, the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation, or CFA charter, has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world. There are currently more than 140,000 CFA charterholders working in over 135 countries around the world. The CFA charter is an investment credential that for more than 60 years, has been the global standard for embodying the integrity, dedication, and advanced skills needed to build a stronger, more accountable financial industry. No credential is as widely respected for its focus on current investment expertise and performing in the client’s best interest. None is harder to obtain.
More than 125 distinguished colleges and universities around the world have incorporated a majority of the CFA Program curriculum into their own courses, including the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School; New York University; INSEAD; Peking University; and Nanyang Technological University.
Earning the CFA charter demonstrates mastery of the skills most needed for investment analysis and decision-making in today’s fast-evolving global financial industry. Completing the entire Program, organized into three levels, each culminating in 3 separate six-hour exams is a significant challenge that takes most candidates between two & half to five years to earn.

A Global Community
The CFA Program leverages the experience and insight of thousands of experts and top practitioners around the world to create a broad and current investment management and analysis curriculum that bridges theoretical knowledge with the practical skills needed in the day-to-day profession.
An important component of this global community of CFA charterholders is the network of local member societies that work with both candidates and members in specific locations around the world. In conjunction with the four regional offices of CFA Institute, the local CFA societies support charterholders throughout their careers by:
- Advocating for investment professionals and market fairness with regulatory bodies,
- Providing access to local professional networks, educational events and programming, and
- Developing globally and locally relevant resources.
